No names or dates. Likely all from Philadelphia, 1850/60s
Could this be Robert J and Mary J Hemphill, daughter Agnes?
(I believe there are no descendants.) Or WK Hemphill
and Sarah's dau Mary R who died young?

1931 FAMILY LETTER mentioning PHILADEPHIA COUSINS
Transcription of handwritten letter dated July 7th, 1931-- additions and corrections still being made-- from the Hemphill Box, May 2009. My comments in brackets [ ]. jth/jeanne taylor hemphill<>FROM: Jennie Hemphill Morton [my great grand aunt lived in Peoria 1857-1941, dau of Robert M. Hemphill ( b. 10 May 1826 "Culdary" Antrim, Ireland)]
TO: Jeannette Taylor Hemphill [her sister in law, my paternal grandmother]
[further ed. note: "Culdary" could be Coolderry. Studying satellite maps, knowing that uncle Daniel McAfee came from Ballymoney, there is a Coolderry (both a North and South Coolderry) a few miles Northwest of Ballymoney]
>My dear Jeannette,
Your good letter received – and was glad to hear from you. And am glad too that you are all about as usual. I am somewhat short on the history of the Hemphill family. Cousin Margaret [Harris] Pierce [b 1856], of Lincoln [City] Neb. at one time was getting data for a family tree but how much she got I never knew. I had asked her at one time about it but did not get much information. [along left edge: What branch did Victor Hemphill belong to?]
[p. 2]
Grandfather [William] Hemphill [d. 1856, IRE per descendant W. Dwight Pierce] was a tailor. He was crippled and grandmother [Jane McAfee Hemphill 1786 - 1872] used to help him with his work. There were four children: Margaret, James, Robert and Jane. Jane died when nine yrs old. Grandfather had a brother who was a minister. When father [Robert M Hemphill] and aunt [Margaret Hemphill] came, they went to a brother of Grandma’s [Jane McAfee Hemphill] who lived at Louisville KY. And father was so fond of these people-- Uncle Daniel and [p. 3] Aunt Rachel McAfee. They had a family of seven[?] children. Uncle Daniel was married three times and there were 14[?] children. He died either at Pana [Christian Co. IL] or Vandalia [Fayette Co. IL]. [ed. note, probably Pana; 1st wife Rachel and Daniel McAfee buried Pisgah, Morgan Co. IL; stones say Ballymoney, Antrim IRE]
There were two cousins of father’s who lived in Philadelphia. One, Wm, was a tobacco merchant. He had three sons--Clemente, Wm, and Julian. [William Kerr Hemphill b abt 1822 PA- d. 2 Apr 1882; wife Sarah J McCune b ~1828 d. 22 Jun 1896 PA; son Clement b~1851; Wm J b~1853; Alexander Julian b Aug 23, 1856; Mary R 1858-d. 10 Mar 1868]
Will [Hemphill] and his mother [Sarah] visited at[?] Father’s [Robert M Hemphill] in 1882. The wife and daughter of the other cousin—I don’t remember his given name—came also to Peoria while (p. 4) Will [Hemphill] and his mother were there. [by 1882 Sarah was widow of W.K. Hemphill; their son Will may have been the visitor with his mother Sarah.] Her name was Mary and the daughter’s name was Agnes and they were very high hat. [Probably Mary J Hemphill widow of Robt J Hemphill by 1880, dau Agnes]
During the time that [husband] Arthur [Morton] and I were at Springfield 1911 to 1914 a next door neighbor had a sister who was married to a Rev. Hemphill. They were on their wedding trip and one day she mentioned hearing from the sister, and she mentioned (Page 5) The name, and they were visiting his people in Ireland. I asked what place and she said County “Atrim”. That was the county that father was from. This family were from ____ [possibly says Carlinville]. Will had an acquaintance at Birmingham, Alabama by the name that he had visited. In the phone book is a John B Hemphill. I found the enclosed letter some time ago and thought [thot] that I would send it to [p. 6] Chester [Hemphill, Jeannette's husband] as it surely belonged to him. I hope Robert Chester [Hemphill, my father] will receive great benefit from this trip, for it will be better for the out door living. And Mary and Billie [dad's siblings] are with you at home.
The Nowlands [Bob and Minnie Hemphill Nowland, Jennie's sister] are about as usual. [Their son] Bob and wife] Esther are still at Camp Brooke but hope soon to be at the new field—Randolph where Bob will have his photo work again. [Daughter] Jane took the prize [p. 7] at a doll parade. Her mother dressed her as a rose. She has had mumps and measles so is coming on fine.
I am sorry to hear of Frank [Byrnes] and Katie’s [Wm Hemphill's wife Ophelia's sister Katie and husband in Jacksonville] ill luck and hope that matters will be better than they are. Those who have had means are finding things much different these strenuous times.
Thanks for your kind invitation but home is the best place for me, this hot weather.
With much love, Jennie [Hemphill Morton][p. ?] Father’s father was Wm. and was born May 10 1824, came to America in 1839 a boy of 15?. Aunt Margaret Hemphill Harris was 17 [b. 1822] and they came with friends, Mr and Mrs. James McKinley. The McKinleys had a daughter who was the wife of a Presbyterian minister at Champaign some years ago, and they (and they) and Cousin Mary [June Harris] Bragg were close friends.

Meredith Hemphill, Jr., 77, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday morning, February 2, 2009. Born on October 12, 1931 in Spring Lake, NJ, he was the son of the late Meredith and Katharine (Dilworth) Hemphill. Meredith was the beloved husband of Beverly Hemphill. They celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary last February 6.
Meredith graduated from R.P.I. with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering in 1953. That same year he joined Bethlehem Steel’s management training program. He left to serve the next two years as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. At the time of his discharge in 1955, he was a company commander with the rank of first lieutenant. Meredith rejoined Bethlehem Steel in 1955 as an engineer in the Johnstown plant’s blast furnace department. Two years later he entered the University of Michigan Law School and in 1959 graduated with a doctor of jurisprudence degree.
From 1959 to 1967, he was an attorney with the law firm of Cravath, Swaine, and Moore in New York City. In 1967, Meredith moved his family to Bethlehem and joined Bethlehem Steel’s law department as an attorney. He was promoted to Assistant General Counsel in 1973 and Assistant General Counsel and Assistant Secretary in 1977. Later, he was appointed Deputy General Counsel and Assistant Secretary for the Law Department. Meredith retired in 1996.
He was a member of Saucon Valley Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem. Meredith was an avid golfer, reader, N.Y. Giant’s football fan, and he loved the opera.

N. B. HEMPHILLS William Hemphill, Labourer, Castlederg, & Margery [Kerr], his wife and family were recorded in the passenger list of the barque Protector which sailed from Londonderry around April 18, and landed in Saint John, N. B. about June 2, 1834. William's oldest son, Samuel, & perhaps his daughter, Rebecca, had already arrived in N. B., in 1832.
Three Kerr family members eventually emigrated to and lived in the same area of N. B. They were Alexander & family who emigrated in 1819, Margery & family, 1834, and Nancy [married to William Rogers] who emigrated in 1840.

DAILY EVENING BULLETIN (PHILADELPHIA, Pa)
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 1870
Robert J. Hemphill, who, from the year 1849 to 1863, was Secretary to the Board of Controllers of Public Schools, died yesterday at his residence in this city. He entered the employment of the Board as a messenger boy. When Thomas B. Florence relinquished the Secretaryship of the Board, Mr. Hemphill was elected to fill his place. Mr. Hemphill was an active local Democratic politician. When ousted by the fortune that had so long befriended him, he accepted a clerkship in the Highway Department, and at the same time entered into the retail coal trade. He served one term as Chairman of the Democratic City Executive Committee, subsequent to his retirement from the Secretaryship of the Board of Control. He died in the prime of life, leaving a family to lament their untimely bereavement.
